Developing Your Community – FaceBook to YouTube

You have built out a presence on FaceBook, YouTube, Twitter and LinkedIn. Now What? The real dirty work begins. Is there an easy button to click that will build your community? No. Can you communicate with the entire world or your local city tomorrow morning? No. Does that mean you shouldn’t try? NO!!!

Building your community takes time. Start by seeding your content, show people what you will be sharing with them. When they come to your Page on FaceBook or YouTube, show them you are providing useful information they want, not simply advertising to them non-stop. Start inviting your friends and family into your community. These are your ambassadors, you need and want them.

Next, reach out into your second degree network. Tapping into your second degree network is critical to finding the community that really cares about your content. Do this one person at a time. Go thru your first degree network, friends and family – encouraging and enabling them to share your content. Most will not know how, they want to help you – help them – help you. Walk them thru sharing your content or your Page, and show your appreciation.

Developing your community on FaceBook to YouTube takes time, creativity and perseverance. Nike…Just Do It.

Social SEO – What we will all be focusing on in 2011

Are you paying attention to how you can use your Social Presence to improve your SEO (Search Engine Optimization)? As Google expands efforts to index the social world, your presence will directly impact what people find when they search your name or for your products or services. By controlling your presence and sharing your content socially, you will rise in Google search. Social Search Engine Optimization is what I think we will all be focusing on in 2011.

Recently, I have been looking at a lot of YouTube Channels. This is an easy area to improve your standings in search. First, you can impact how you show up in search on YouTube by optimizing your channel. This means filling in the details you can in your profile, keywords for your channel as well as a Title for your channel. Each video you add is an opportunity to improve your searchability. Take the time to include location, date, a detailed description, links in that description, a relevant title and of course keywords. Is this worth your time? Only if you want to show up on search in YouTube and improve your standings in Google search. Social SEO, the next frontier.

YouTube – The World is Watching

I have been thinking about YouTube a lot lately. Why? Two Billion videos a day are being watched on YouTube. This is amazing for a site that has only been around since February 2005. I have become fond of saying “You can own your own media broadcasting station on YouTube.” That doesn’t really do YouTube justice. It is far more powerful than that. Not only can you upload your videos for mass distribution, people can watch them on their phones, homes and even in coffee shops. Mass media TV hasn’t gotten there yet. It is also amazingly easy to share your videos. How easy? As Israel battles an activist group trying to end the embargo in the Gaza strip, the government directs people to YouTube to see their version of the situation. What? Yes! An international diplomacy issue is being settled on YouTube, right now.

Check out the video distributed by the Israeli Government over You Tube HERE. As governments start using social media effectively, we can see these truly fit into classical tools for dissemination of information such as newspapers, radio and television. Even more importantly, social media enables you to share the news and information relevant to you. You can do that also – get your own YouTube channel. Take the time to fill in your profile and include your keywords. Unlike FaceBook, search on YouTube is powered by Google (parent/owner). Translate that to means earch actually works on YouTube and if you put in your keywords appropriately on both your videos and your channel you will be found easily by any of the 2 billion people tuning in each day who are interested in your material.

What else should you be doing? Build up your subscribers. These are people who will be notified when you post new content to your YouTube channel. Share your videos on FaceBook, YouTube makes it easy. Attach your Twitter account to You Tube so your YouTube activity is broadcast automatically on YouTube. This is the only painful step. You MUST have a Gmail account to attach your Twitter account. It is the only crappy process I have ever encountered with Google products, but it is powerful enough that it is worth the effort. Own your own media broadcasting station, get active on YouTube today.

Getting FaceBook, Twitter and YouTube to Talk to each other – Automatically

Recently I am seeing a lot of people making progress in using Social Media to communicate more effectively. How do you get your resources to “talk to each other” is a minor nightmare. Below I am going to walk thru integrating a FaceBook Fan Page with Twitter, YouTube with Twitter and Your Blog with a FaceBook Fan Page (or your personal Page). This post assumes you have a Twitter account, FaceBook Account and YouTube account!

Connecting your FaceBook Fan Page to Twitter

Why do you want to do this? Because every time you Post to your FaceBook Fan Page Wall as an Administrator, a Tweet will be sent out automatically with a shortened version of the Post and a Link to your Fan Page. This helps grow your Fan base and reduces the need to Tweet the same update, creating efficiency in your process.

The process is very easy, navigate to http://www.facebook.com/twitter and you will be given the option to link your Fan Page to your Twitter Account.

FB to TwitterYou must allow access on Twitter as part of the process. I find it easiest to be logged into Twitter when I do this process on FaceBook. Easy right? Are you wondering why you did not do this before? This Blog Post was automatically Tweeted because I use Twitter Tools as a Plugin on WordPress, same idea. Let’s try YouTube, almost as easy with one painful step.

Connecting your YouTube Account to Twitter

Before you start this process, you MUST have a Gmail account attached to your YouTube account. If you signed up for YouTube with a different email address, take the time to get a Gmail address and attach it to your YouTube Account. This is annoying but you can not attach your Twitter account unless you have a Gmail account.

Log into YouTube and navigate to your account settings. Select SHARING and take a look at your AutoShare options. I could not handle all of my YouTube activity being posted to FaceBook, so after attaching this I promptly unattached it. Selecting Twitter, confirming your Gmail address, allow access on Twitter and you are done.  Quick and easy, your YouTube Videos will now automatically send a Tweet with a Link when you upload them. Holy Powerful Batman!

YouTube to TwitterFaceBook Notes Syncing with your Blog

This is a little confusing to set-up, but a great way to keep your FaceBook friends in the loop with what you post on your Blog. The process is basically the same for Fan Pages as well as your personal FaceBook account. Navigate to your Fan Page on FaceBook, you must be an Administrator. Select Notes on the Tab, you may have to click on the + sign and select Notes (you can also move these tabs around, I like to put the Photos, Videos, Notes after Info). This is where things get confusing. I select write a new note in the top right corner, then in the top right corner I select the little Note icon, that takes me out of Write a Note and let’s me Import an RSS Feed.

FaceBook NotesThe Feed for your Blog will depend on what service you use and how your blog is configured. This is a little confusing and I am not much help here. You can figure out what your Feed is by subscribing to your Blog, then pasting that address in to your Settings here. Now, a few minutes after you post to your Blog that post will filter in to your fan page as a Note. This may reduce traffic to your Blog, but that should only bruise your ego slightly. The real goal is to keep your Fans and audience engaged with your material. Now you can post your Blog on FaceBook occasionally to remind people you have a Blog, but you do not have to do that for every post, your Fans will stay in the loop because your Blog and Fan Page are part of your circle of communication.

FaceBook Blog Feed to NotesThe above techniques are easy ways to get your social media working together. This will evolve with time but the general idea will remain the same. Enable your social networks to talk with each other and truly harness the power of social media. Feel free to post any hints or improvements to the process in the comments section.

High Percentage Shots – Another Cavs Playoff Post

Lebron Shoots High Percentage ShotsLebron James and the Cavs just swept the Hawks, winning their 8th playoff game in a row. Why are the Cavs playing so well? High Percentage Shots. As you can see above, Lebron is taking a fast break opportunity to elevate his game and dunk the ball. The goal is unobstructed and Lebron floats as close as possible to the hoop, using his power to guide the ball forward. Lebron’s eyes are calm and focused, completely present in the moment.

I have been looking at how people answer questions on LinkedIn and a divide is growing faster than I expected. The leaders are providing great answers, focused on their areas of expertise, citing sources and presenting information, not simple unsubstantiated opinions. These are high percentage shots and you need to take a lot of them to get your game where it needs to be. It takes time, but each week it is worth the effort to dedicate 15 minutes to answering a question on LinedIn.

This is a slam dunk for you. You can research your answer, copy and paste links, even spell check. While the others are missing wide open 3 pointers, you can score consistently and look good doing it. Be present, Live in this moment. Your focus will breed clarity. When you take high percentage shots, everybody wins.
