Now live on the left hand side of some Pages, you can write a recommendation that hits your newsfeed, promoting the Page. Essentially this acts as a Status Update! FaceBook Advertising – Jump Start Your Community

You’ve got a Page on FaceBook for your business. You have started Suggesting the Page to your friends and even gotten a few friends to Share your Page. You are doing the basics, like including links to your Page in your email newsletter and printing the link on all of your collateral, but your Page is not growing fast enough. What’s next? FaceBook Advertising!

Set up an Ad on FaceBook for your Page. Keep the traffic directing to your Page and limit the Ads to friends of your Page. Why? Because a referral in business from a friend is invaluable. Why YOU should be using Questions on FaceBook! Hint because the Cleveland Clinic isn’t!

I make fun of the Cleveland Clinic a lot in the world of Social Media. Why? Because they are the GIANT company in Cleveland and their Page on FaceBook has less people liking them than they have employees. A few months ago FaceBook “viralized” a new feature, Questions. This means, if you use the new feature, you will create a larger wave on FaceBook. Use Questions, it is a brilliant FaceBook feature. Plus, you can limit the potential answers via radio buttons, reducing potentially brand damaging answers.

Subscribe to FaceBook Deals – Find out where you can SAVE when you check-in on FaceBook

Do you like to save money? Maybe get a complimentary cup of coffee when you check-in at a restaurant like fire? FaceBook is letting you subscribe to localized Deals within your city/zipcode. Is this hot? Judging by the success of Groupon, Americans love to save money. Now you can find out where there is an incentive encouraging you to check-in. Exciting? Yeah, this is going to encourage competition and that is good for everybody. Competition? Yeah, Competition. Businesses are going to look at what their competition is offering as a deal and you the people of FaceBook are going to be rewarded with better deals.

What if there was no FaceBook?

Last night I was talking with Jill Jankowski at the House of Blues where we saw The New Pornagraphers (Great Band). Jill pointed out the transition FaceBook has made into the world of marketing by asking the question “What if there was no FaceBook?” This is a brilliant question we all need to ask! Contrast this question with “What if there was no newspaper?” Did you know the Detroit Free Press doesn’t deliver during the week anymore? The answer is simple, nobody will care when newspapers stop printing. The newspaper is dead.

FaceBook is alive and kicking. People have said to me recently, “yeah FaceBook is boring and people are losing interest.” I remind you, we are FaceBook. If it is boring, you either need to make some new friends or start contributing more. FaceBook is here to stay! When I think about Jill’s question, I realize I can’t imagine a world without FaceBook. I would deeply miss my old friends who I have reconnected with, the updates from bands and pages I “like” and all of the people I have met and connected with who I get to know on FaceBook. The transition is complete, FaceBook is the medium communications classes should be studying and copy writers should be focusing on for figuring out how to communicate with people on behalf of the Brands they write for.

3 Reasons why you are excited to Upgrade your FaceBook Page to the Official profile

The Official FaceBook Page upgrade is coming, and if you don’t do the optional upgrade now, it will be done Automatically for you on March 10, 2011. Don’t wait, don’t complain – The Upgrade kicks @$$!!! Why? (see screen shots below).

  1. The ability to change your settings so you can comment on your Page again personally. This is nice if you are a member of your community!!!
  2. FINALLY – Get email notification when someone comments on your Page. Thank You FaceBook (Jamie bowing in deference).

FaceBook Places – What does it mean to you as a Business Owner?

FaceBook Places is going to change the “face” of FaceBook in an amazing way. Looking out 6-12 months, we are going to have an amazing database of information. You will be able to ask your friends who have check-in at Places what they think of it. Imagine if Reviews on Fan Pages are Tied in with Places and the Fan Pages? This is going to be huge!!!

Until then, this is what you need to know as a business owner directly from FaceBook.
If you are the official representative of your business, please take the following verification steps to claim the Place on Facebook:
1) Search for the Place on Facebook you wish to claim as your business. If no Place exists for your business, you can create a new Place.
2) Once you locate the Place for your business, click the “Is this your business?” link at the bottom of the Place.
Complete the step-by-step verification process to claim your Place.
3) Please keep in mind that only official representatives of a business can claim the Place on Facebook.

Why Claim you Place?

By claiming your Place you can manage your Place’s address, contact information, business hours, profile picture, admins and other settings.

What else?
Do something very basic, like put up a sign asking people to check-in. This is the best word of mouth advertising you can get. Get more aggressive and ask them to tag you (must be friends) or better yet Tag their friends!
*Think about your business and how you can use Places. Get Creative. Use this as an opportunity to connect with your customers.

The Top 7 Do’s of using Social Media in Your Job Search

This piece was done with Alex Sukhoy of Creative Cadence in mind. I’d also like to credit Susie Sharp who connects people on a weekly/daily basis and actively promotes opportunities in the greater Cleveland area. You don’t have to be actively searching for a job to use these tips to grow revenue at your current company. I could have called this, “things you know if you have read every one of my posts on this blog.”

1) Complete your LinkedIn profile.
This should be a 1 hour work session. Fill in the details, make sure your personality and experience shine. This is your “living resume,” make sure you are well represented from your professional experience to your education to your interests. The more information you share in your profile, the easier it will be for people to connect with you. You must have a decent head shot that shows your eyes, an easy to share link to your profile (that should be included on your resume and in the signature line of your email), and your specialties included as keywords. Never ask for a recommendation on LinkedIn, give them weekly until you run out of people to write them for. Giving recommendations on LinkedIn promotes your profile keeping you in front of your network and builds social capital. Write a recommendation for everyone that has worked for you, that you have worked for, that you know professionally or personally. Keep them short, simple and honest, remembering these recommendations build your credibility and communicate how well you write to the reader.

2) Lock down your FaceBook profile.
Yes, your potential employers can look you up on FaceBook and see all of the posts in your newsfeed, if you let them. My rules for FaceBook privacy settings are very simple. Everything should be set to “friends only,” except for Search and Messaging which should be set to “Everybody;” and “Pictures and Videos,” which I encourage you to set to “Friends of Friends.” When you lock down your privacy settings under Account, you do not have to worry about potential employers or school admission teams looking thru your profile. That said, CLEAN IT UP. If you are not comfortable with your mother seeing what is on your FaceBook profile, it should be deleted. You are responsible for what you post and the pictures you are in. If someone posts inappropriate pictures of you, untag yourself and politely ask them to remove the picture. Yes, you must put in your education and employment history on FaceBook. Although FaceBook is your “social network,” it may be your most valuable (especially since it has 500 million users and is growing faster than ever before). Give your friends the chance to know you professionally as well as personally.

3) Tell your network what opportunity you are looking for.
People have to know how they can help you. The worst thing that can happen is people will not respond or they will say no. You must get comfortable telling people what you are looking for and asking them for help with specific goals. Asking to be introduced to specific people or even types of companies is the best way to empower people to help you. You can use the status updates in LinkedIn, FaceBook and Twitter as well as direct email followed by a phone call.

4) Do your research.
Look up companies you are interested in on Google, LinkedIn, FaceBook, Twitter. Do the same thing with people you are meeting or interviewing with. If you are doing your research you will find connections, common ground and areas of focus. How you use this information will play a role in your success. What kind of information will be useful to you? Anything form a shared interest, to a mutual friend, to the alma mater of your potential employer to recent news about the company. You have access to an unlimited power, knowledge. Use it!

5) Expand your connections.
I call this the Rainbow Theory. The connections in your Network make up the rainbow of your life. Each of them is a unique color representing some aspect of you and your relationship. We want a large beautiful rainbow (friends and connections), why? Because at the end of that rainbow is a pot of gold, only you can limit how big that pot of gold is. Expand your connections, friendships and relationships and you increase the potential of that pot of gold. How do you find that pot of gold? See #6.

6) Meet up in public as often as possible.
Social networking is not a competition to see who has the most “friends” or “contacts.” It is the opportunity to get to know people better. You must dig thru your contacts and set up meetings every single week. When you travel, find people in your network and get meetings, breakfast, coffee or drinks with them. Your next opportunity may live in another city yet have a great connection for you. By meeting in public places you will see other people you know, this is not an accident. Follow-up with these people and participate in your community. Remember to stay actively engaged in the process of helping other people with opportunities they are looking for.

7) Be more generous.
Share your skills and time liberally. Volunteer. You can do more good for your reputation and search for opportunity by giving your time and the most valuable skills you have, until you are “running on empty.” People will see the value you bring to the table, you will meet new people in real working situations and you will have positive situations to talk about with potential employers and clients as you look for your next opportunity. You are the most valuable asset you have, the more you share your skills and talent the more valuable of an asset you become to society. Increase your value, be more generous.

Time Management – How to use your time effectively when networking

Recently I asked some friends on FaceBook for “requests,” something all DJs hate. The topic of Time Management was suggested by one of my peers, Heidi Cool. Heidi is a great Cleveland resource for website and blog design and implementation, who also leads our local blogging meet up – the Lake Erie Moose. I get asked regularly, “How much time is this going to take?” The simple answer is as much time as you can afford. The obnoxious answer is, “depends on how much you want to increase your revenue.” The true answer is 15 minutes per week per network.

That is a lie. It generally takes about 2 hours to get your profile set-up and learn how to use the network. Once you are set-up you generally need to dedicate another 2 hours to expanding your presence on that network. Now you can start using your time efficiently. Some networks need to be checked daily. For example, I log into LinkedIn every day, but only spend a few minutes checking my newsfeed, looking for long lost connections/friends and replying to emails. Once a week you should spend 5 minutes writing a recommendation. If you want to dive into Questions and Answers, prepare to dedicate 15 minutes per question. I generally don’t advise newbies to invest their time in Questions and Answers. Why? Because they are a great way to establish your knowledge base and credibility, but they take an enormous time commitment most people are not willing to give. The ROI is 8-12 months on answering questions. I’d rather see you writing recommendations on a weekly basis. End conclusion, use your time wisely on LinkedIn and you can do very well with 15 minutes per week.

FaceBook. 15 minutes. Yeah right. FaceBook is way too engaging to limit yourself to 15 minutes. But, if you are maintaining a Fan Page then 15 minutes may be perfect. Check the Wall every day and delete any junk posts as well as respond to posts. Once a week make a post (aim for between 2-5 pm EST) and once a week add some pictures. 15 well spent minutes every week on FaceBook.

Twitter. Oy Vey. The first couple of weeks take hours. You should be making posts, Re-Tweeting and finding niche people to follow, adding the ones who follow you back to Lists. Once you get thru the ramp up period, you can settle back into a 15 minute per week routine. Check your List, Re-Tweet someone who has posted something valuable, Tweet, Follow back your new Followers and Follow a few new people. Week in and week out this is the perfect 15 minute routine.

Blogging. Good luck. The 15 minute rule doesn’t apply here. Good blog posts can take hours, sometimes minutes. You determine the frequency, quality and quantity. Be considerate of your readers and avoid doing what I have done here, share excessively.Sometimes a picture is a brilliant Blog Post and it takes just a few seconds to post. Be that bold.

Niche networks. I participate in a variety of niche networks based on my interests and I encourage you to do the same. You will find the conversation more stimulating and the content more engaging, because you are following your passion. How much time do these networks deserve? The real anser is how much time can you afford. Every network we participate in can take hours of each day. Since you control the flow of information you must prioritize based on work/passion balance. All answers are correct here, but I encourage you to keep the 15 minute rule in mind. Limit the number of networks you participate in to the ones you can afford to commit time to.

Real world networking events. This is a tough one. Meet everybody, but invest your time wisely in getting to know new people. You are the best judge of who you want to meet. When you meet interesting people, take the time to get to know them. It may be the only time you ever get to talk in person. If you are at an event and see someone from your network that you have not met before, introduce yourself and remind them how you know them. A few weeks ago I was at a concert and saw a guy I had connected with on faceBook, but never met in person. I shed that uncomfortable feeling and introduced myself. If I didn’t, I would have felt obligated to delete him from my friend list (basic rule – only stay friends with people you would say hi to if you saw them in a random situation – like the supermarket or a show). Whatever you do, know when to say when and move on from a conversation and meet someone else. Use your time effectively!

In conclusion, the 15 minute rule can apply per day or per week on each network. Explore the networks beyond FaceBook and participate in communities based on your passion/hobby. Share you knowledge, your life and your media; but, respect your time and use your time effectively when networking in the real world and online.

Finding Balance – Quality Vs. Quantity

How does the Rainbow Theory work? You must build up a vibrant beautiful rainbow of connections, that represent all of the phases and aspects of your life. At the end of that Rainbow, is a pot of gold. How do you find that Pot of Gold? Get together in the real world with your online connections. Make times to meet your friends, family, connections for coffee or breakfast or drinks. When you get together in the real world with your online connections, you are exploring the pot of gold. Finding opportunity where only potential existed before.

So, how do we balance Quantity vs. Quality as we build out our network? Your strategy should be – Connect to everybody you know, or want to get to know better. 10% of your network should be Phat. people you don’t know, but might be interested in getting to know better. As your connections expand, the Phat factor is going to increase. Make the effort to get to know your connections and your Phat factor will decrease. Each year you should cut some Phat and give your network some room to expand with fresh Phat. You get the idea, make new friends, but keep the old, one is silver and the other is gold.

There are no easy answers to the question of quantity vs. quality. What I can tell you is that nobody can limit the potential of your network like you can. If you add more connections, you create more opportunity or more potential. In the end, you must convert that potential into kinetic. You must put in the time and energy to get to know your network and understand the resources available to you. Apply the Rainbow Theory to your network, build a great big beautiful rainbow and find the pot of gold waiting for you – then share it with everybody you know.

Support Your Company’s Social Media Initiative

It is strange to me, that employees will log in to FaceBook at work, text their friends making plans for later, take smoke breaks and socialize outside – But when it comes to supporting their company online, they are not willing to help. Hear me loud and clear folks, everyone must pitch in to keep your company growing, especially you.

Local Business and FaceBook Fan Growth – The Stopping Point!

In contrast to “The Tipping Point,” if you have a local business with walk-in traffic your goal is to find “The Stopping Point.” What is this? it is the point in your business where your customers/clients stop, even if for a brief minute. This is the spot where you have to encourage them to become a Fan of your business on FaceBook. This is an almost magical spot and when you find it you will find the growth and momentum you have been looking for on your Fan Page.

A really aggressive approach is to ask them to sign into FaceBook right there on the spot and become a Fan. Taking this one step further you can ask them to Share the Fan Page or even “Suggest To Friends.” This is how you continue to grow your FaceBook Fan Page organically, using walk-in traffic and current customers to find new fans and more business.

A less aggressive approach is to put a sign up at a potential stopping point. For most of you this will be a cash register or sign-in spot. If you get the Fan Page traffic you want, great – you are effectively using your “stopping point.” If you are not getting the boost in Fans, it is because people are forgetting by the time they leave your business and get caught up in their busy lives. It is not personal, we are all overwhelmed with content. They may become a Fan, but not “Suggest to friends.” When they are right in front of you, ask them to “Suggest to friends” on the spot. They can select a network (Like Cleveland or whatever), Select All and Send Invitations. This will take less than a minute and effectively build up your Fan Page.

Take your Fan Page to The Next Level, find your “Stopping Point,” and implement a strategy for growth.

FaceBook has 400 Million Users

I guess this isn’t really exciting, FaceBook now has 400 Million users. No wonder they are getting 2.5 billion photos a month uploaded. What does that mean to you as a business? There are 50 million new users on FaceBook in the last 2 months. Yeah, FaceBook is still growing.

Advertising on FaceBook – Grow Your Fan Page

Do you want to grow your FaceBook Fan Page? How about advertising on FaceBook? I suggest going with a Pay-Per Click that leads to your Fan Page.Why? Because your Ad will be seen by a lot more people, you will get hundreds of thousands of impressions. You want people to click thru and become a Fan, they can even select “Become a Fan” right on your ad with a single click. So what? Once they are a Fan you can easily reach them with your messaging and expand your relationship. You can create the incentives to get them to your website, location or simply picking up the phone when you call. You want as many fans as possible!

The going rate appears to be .45-.50 cents to advertise to people within 25 miles of Cleveland. How many people are there on FaceBook within 25 miles of Cleveland? According to FaceBook 596,760! Of which, 335,180 are women, 18 and older. Looking to reach women 30 and over, you have 203,600 potential fans! Within 50 miles of Cleveland we have 800,00 people on FaceBook. Are these your potential customers?  Business has never been more social…

FaceBook Fan Pages and your Lists get a Steroid Injection

So…you thought it was annoying when I said you should take the time to add some Lists on FaceBook, organize your friends so you can easily see updates from groups of people. FaceBook realized you needed more of an incentive, now you can click on one of your lists and update your status to that list. This is potentially a powerful communication tool if you have your lists organized as I do, school, places I have lived, etc.

Continuing with this line of thought, FaceBook added a similar feature to the Fan Pages. Now when you post as an Admin to a Fan Page you can specify what language or country you want the post to be seen by. This may only be useful to Fan Pages with large groups of Fans right now, but this is also a potentially powerful communication tool.

The good news to me is I am increasingly feeling like FaceBook is implementing well thought out logical features. The reality of FaceBook is you need to play with the features to get it. This is complex software that looks and feels very simple. It is not. If you want to dig deeper, you will find a high powered sports car waiting for you to drive it. By the way, I am pretty sure FaceBook is currently hosting more photos than any website in the world, put that in your pipe and smoke it.

Pictures, FaceBookand your Fan Page – the Missing Tag

You can’t get enough pictures on FaceBook, especially if you have a Fan Page. With 16 Billion plus photos on FaceBook, this is an area you do not want to miss. It is a great way to promote your business and your Fans! Photos hit your Fans news feed, just like a post does. Add Captions, tag people and find the balance that makes photos interesting and comment worthy. Remember you must enable tagging of photos on your Fan Page, this is not on by default. Scroll down to the bottom right of your Fan Page and you should see a photo box and edit options, click on edit options and enable your Fans to Tag themselves and their friends in Photos. Why? Because when people are tagged in photos their friends see those pictures and as a result they see your Fan Page. This is an easy, cheap, great way to organically grow your fan base.

You can only tag people you are friends with, asking people to tag themselves works or find a contest or prize as an incentive for people to tag themselves. If you have a business with walk in traffic, start taking pictures of people and getting them up on the Fan Page, ask the people in the photos to tag themselves and to share the fan page with their friends. You can also put up a sign with your FaceBook address encouraging people to become a Fan of your page on FaceBook. Whatever you do, get photos on your fan page and start interacting with your people.

Linking your FaceBook Fan Page to Twitter

Following a link from @susiesharp to http://mashable.com/2009/08/20/facebook-twitter-app/ I decided to link up a few FaceBook Fan Pages I am the admin for to their respective Twitter accounts. I logged into Twitter, opened up a new browser tab and navigated to http://www.facebook.com/twitter. It was quick and easy to Link the Twitter account to the Fan Page. There are controls so you can select options like only status updates or events get posted to Twitter, I left all pre-selected. Now anything an admin posts on the Fan Page will automatically be Tweeted. Very Cool.

FaceBook Fan Box – Get Some

If you are an admin on a FaceBook Fan Page, you can create a Fan Box (top left on the page, just under the logo). This is a little bit of code that lets you embed a “Fan Box” on any website, bringing FaceBook interaction directly to your web page. You can see an example of this in the left column of my page where I am running an example for some organizations I feel passionate about.

How did I do this? Too simple, I added a Text Box Widget in the left column of my Word Press theme. Then, I pasted the code FaceBook generated for me into the text box and clicked Save.

Why do this? Ideally we want a circle of communication in our networks…see the Back2Basics image a few posts down. Encourage participation on your FaceBook Fan Page.

Why are Fan Pages better than Group Pages? 2 very simple reasons. First, when you post to your fan page it hits the newsfeed of all of your fans (not true on groups). This is a power that you can abuse. Don’t worry, if you abuse your posting ability your fans will show you by un-faning you (sorry – new word). Second, FaceBook Insights. You have to be an administrator of the page to see these, but they are awesome. You can see how many times photos or videos have been viewed, how many new fans, postings by fans, etc. This is not as powerful as Google Analytics, but it is a feature you do not have if you are the admin of a FaceBook Group.
